Roy,

It is great that you stopped by, thank you for sharing that you light a candle in memory of your mom. I have seen the devastating effects of a candle container that has exploded and created the same surface scaring. It is quite freighting.

It was a good thing that you were home and not out when that happened.

I remember the days of having to light the pilot light on the stove with matches and I am very thankful those days are gone.

It is great that the match went out while falling, that could have been a very ugly situation.

Ali, thank you for stopping by. Your bees wax candles sound simply lovely. I actually hold classes for children with PDD-NOS, I use the sheet bees wax for those classes as it helps with their motor skills.

Soy is processed from flakes vs the sheets. It also would not be a good canidate for the rolling method like bees wax is. Your room temprature and wax temprature is still an important factor.

Did you make your seets?

I enjoy using sheets of bees wax to make very delicate floating candles--like fish and a big rose. The room and wax temperature need to be just right and the work is very delicate. the finished products make great gifts. I put the rose in a brandy snifter filled with glass stones and the fish in a goldfish bowl filled with glass stones.
I had forgotten how enjoyable the hobby of candle-making can be. Thanks for blgging about it.
I nevewr made a soy candle. It was not "in" back when I was making candles and buying supplies. How is it different?

Wow! teaching kids about all kinds of fire is pretty danged important. I almost set our house on fire when I was little. I used to like to strike matches. I had to light our gas stove with a match so I was used to them. But one day I dropped a lit match while standing by the drapes. Thankfully it went out while falling. I never played with matches again. Wish someone had told me about the dangers.

Since yesterday was the anniversary of my mom's death, it meant we had a candle lit all day. Each time I do that (this is the 14th year for her; my dad's been gone for 25 y), I recall the person- and one seminal event.
A long time ago (24 y??), I lit a candle for my dad. It was in a special container (supposedly designed for 24 hour burning). But, around three hours into the flame, while my daughters and I were just hanging around talking, we heard a large retort. We actually felt a piece or two of the glass container had exploded- and the formica top upon which it was placed was scorched black...
We never put out candles again with an aluminum foil liner; we never put out the 24 hour candle without putting it into a small metal container we bought for the purpose.
BTW, my daughters were then 6 and 2. (My son was not even a glimmer in anyone's eye).
