Candles For A Cause 911 Candle Memorial

As a nation, we were all impacted during the horrible attack on April 19th, 1995 when Timothy McVey bombed the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  Just six short years later, many of us watched in horror as the Twin Towers fell to terror attacks.  As this anniversary nears, let us honor the men and women who selflessly gave their time, lives, and support.

I found this fantastic article written by, Robert Mayer who is a reporter for the East Hampton Portland Patch.  With his permission, I am posting it here so that we can all join in nationwide to help show our support.

Please let me know if you will be joining in, I would love for you to share your pictures. I know my neighborhood will be joining and I look forward to showing off the photo’s.

Ex-Firefighter Aims To Spark National 9/11 Candle Memorial

On the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Lori Odishoo of Berlin wants all of us to pay tribute to those who lost their lives by lighting three candles.

Lori Odishoo of Berlin wasn’t prepared for what she saw when she and her husband, Matt, drove to New York City a few days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center to pay their respects.

“Words can’t express what I felt looking at it. There was dust everywhere. It was so overwhelming,” Odishoo, a former firefighter and current 911 dispatcher in Manchester, said recently. “We stopped at a few fire stations to pay our respects and it is hard to tell you how the firemen looked. They were almost haunted. There was such sorrow and pain in their eyes, it was hard to take.

“I wish I could be elegant with my words, but as I look back I still choke up trying to describe what we saw.”

Matt, the fire marshal and a firefighter in Berlin, and Lori had to drive through a defacto war zone to reach rubble-strewn lower Manhattan that day.

“We had to keep going through these checkpoints because the area was still very fluid,” Lori said. “We kept going and going and finally we were staring at what was left of the World Trade Center. We never expected to get there, but there we were in all the dust and debris.”

The couple was deeply affected by the post-apocalyptic scene, and Lori vowed to never forget the people who died or suffered as a result of the attacks. Every year since the attacks, she places three candles (red, white and blue) at the bottom of her driveway at dusk on Sept. 11. Some of her friends and neighbors have done it in years past, but this year, Lori wants to start a national movement to remember those affected by 9/11, and she wants your help.

“With this being the 10th anniversary, my goal is to get everybody to (do it),” Lori Odishoo said. “The first anniversary, some people did it. And I do it every year to make sure we remember,” she said. “But (this year) I want everybody to do it. I want the whole town to do it. I want the state to do it, and I want everyone in the country to do it.”

Lori Odishoo has started a Facebook page titled 9/11 10th Anniversary Candle Memorial to rally people across the country to the cause, and so far has 613 people listed as “attending” the candle “event.” People can also leave their memories and thoughts of Sept. 11 on the page’s wall.

The red candle signifies firefighters and EMS personnel. The white candle stands for civilian lives lost, and the blue is for police and military.

“This may not catch on all over, but (Berlin) is pretty great and I hope everyone will join us in remembering those who were affected by the tragedy.”

I encorage everyone to join in on this great Candles For A Cause Memorial.  I would also like to thank Lori Odishoo and Robert Mayer for sharing this great story and idea.

Creating Memories With Natural Wax Candles

I have a dream.  Anyone who has seen Mama Mia should remember one of the last songs to both the movie and the Broadway production.  Nonetheless, I have a dream takes on a whole new meaning with families that find themselves within the STICU Waiting Room at BAMC.  Whether they are in the STICU or the Burn Center Waiting Room, they have a dream.  It is the dream that their loved one will survive just one more day.

Simple Ways To Help BAMC STICU Families

Families at the BAMC waiting rooms arrive on a split notice.  They do not have time to logically think of what they may need while there.  Here are some simple things you can do to help make their stay just a little bit easier.

  1. Bottle water
  2. books
  3. magazines
  4. Snacks
  5. Pen and paper
  6. Travel pillow
  7. Small Blanket

Eventually, once a loved one within the STICU or Burn Unit moves onto the next level of care, families feel more comfortable to spend the night at a hotel nearby.  A special care package helps to ease the extreme financial burden that is in place while a loved one is at BAMC.

Care Package

A care package with the following items not only helps families know that they are being thought of, but it also helps with the little things that make stress go away.

  • Tooth brush
  • Tooth paste
  • Wash cloth
  • Lavender scented candle - lavender is said to help aide in relaxing.  If there is anything a BAMC STICU family needs is to relax.

What are some suggestions you have to help aide families that are in a Level 1 Trauma Unit?

Life in the STICU waiting room – BAMC Families Coming Together

Today is Independence Day.  For many of us, Independence Day brings family’s together to cook out and watch the fireworks.  Many of us are pool side enjoying a splash in the water.  For the STICU family, it is different.  They are waiting for the news of their loved one to see if they will survive the tragic accident that brought them there.

For the soldiers and civilian families that are brought to BAMC, STICU North becomes a room full of family members, clergy, and friends all waiting to hear the news of a loved one.  As more families gather for their loved one, the STICU family becomes larger.  When a new family arrives in the middle of the night, they are lost, freighted, tearful, and hopeful.

It is the duty of other STICU family members to console, offer hope, give a hug and cry with these families.  It is also the duty of the STICU family to show the new families the ropes.  They give them a hug and fill them in on important information like:

  • What window and where it is that their cell phone will work at
  • Where the cafeteria is
  • Where they can get coffee in the middle of the night
  • They offer the Chaplin’s name and where the Chapel is
  • For those that smoke, they show them the outdoor smoking room

At the end of the tour there is a hug.  This is not just any hug, this is a hug that comes from the heart and is felt through and through.  It is a hug that says, I have been where you are right now.  It also says, I am here when or if you need me.

There is one thing that all STICU families come to realize, regardless of why they are there, it is the miraculous doctors and nurses that serve our  military and civilians that end up at BAMC that are heroes.   It is their undying devotion to serve that gives our wounded soldiers and civilians the courage to move forward.  It is the strength they  pass to the STICU families that helps to encourage our wounded.

So for today, Independence Day, let us salute and give thanks to the doctors and nurses who serve at BAMC.  For without them, the STICU families would not have that glimmer of hope they so desperately need.

For information about how you can help the STICU families, please follow along for the month of July.  I will be sharing more ways you can show your support.
