Candles For A Cause – Christmas Behind The Scenes Project

Regency Manor Nursing Home Angel Tree Project

Let's help make Christmas brighter by adopting an Angel from Regency Manor Nursing Home's Angel Tree

For those of you that have been following  for a while, you know that as a family, we adopt seniors through the Salvation Army.  The reason we do this is because all too often, those that are in a nursing home are either often forgotten because they have no family or their health, or physical limitations make it impossible for nursing home members to be with family during the holidays.

Salvation Army Red Kettle Program

This year we continue to support the Salvation Army Red Kettle Program.  You see the kettles just about everywhere, especially if you frequent Walmart.  The Kettle workers are very diligent withstanding the cold, wet temperatures in hopes of filling their kettles for the Christmas season and throughout the year.

It would not be the Christmas season if the kids did not stop by the Red Kettles and place what change they were able to conjure up before our trip.

Regency Manor Nursing Home

This year we have joined other families in helping make this Christmas season a special time for the residence of Regency Manor Nursing Home located in Floresville, Texas.

They have an Angel Tree Christmas Project that is currently in full swing.  We have decided to adopt two residents this year as Regency Manor has 105.  That is a lot of elderly and handicapped people who also are looking for a joyous Christmas.

Won’t You Join In

I would love for everyone of our readers to join in on the fun and help to make this Christmas special for the residents of Regency Manor.  If you would like to join our family in helping to make this a special day, here are just some things that the residence at Regency Manor could use.

Gift Ideas

  • Fleece blankets – to help keep the draft off of their legs or shoulders
  • Non-slip socks – to help aide residence not only keep their feet warm but to also keep them from slipping on the floor.
  • Cardigan Sweaters – sizes small, medium, large, extra large, XXL.
  • Snacks – Sugar free snacks are always a great idea, popcorn, or granola is also a fantastic idea.
  • Hot Chocolate – Many of the residence love hot chocolate.

Candles For A Cause – 9/11 Candle Memorial – Interview with Lori Odishoo

In just several short days, many communities will be holding events to remember the lives that were lost during the 9/11 attacks.  Some of these events will be large, some will be small.  There is one special woman who is busy trying to gather communities nationwide to join forces.

Interview with Lori Odishoo

Hi Lori thank you for taking time out of your already busy schedule and allowing me to ask a few questions regarding your 9/11 Candle Memorial.

Q: What made you think about starting a nationwide candle memorial?

A: I originally came up with the idea for this on the 1st anniversary. I remember being so moved by all the candles that were lit the night after the attacks and wanted to use that as a silent way to show that we will never forget. Unfortunately I came up with the idea about 2 weeks before the 1st anniversary and there just wasn’t time to try and get it together so I decided to shelve it and wait for the 10th anniversary.

Q: Did I understand correctly that you were a firefighter?

A: Yes, I was a volunteer firefighter here in CT for about 8 years. I am also a 911 public safety dispatcher and dispatch police/fire and EMS. My husband is also a firefighter and Fire Marshal or the town we live in.

Q: You have a Facebook page dedicated to the 9/11 Candle Memorial. How many people are you hoping to get involved on the page?

A: As many as I possibly can! If I had my way, the entire world will be lit up on 9/11 with candles.

Q: Do you have any times and instructions that you would like to share so that everyone is united?

A: Just light your candles outside at dusk. While preferably I would love to see everyone with all 3 candles, If you don’t have all 3 colors, that’s fine, it is the thought that matters. Even if all you have is a pink with blue polka dot candle, that will work!

Q: Is this a memorial that you would like to see happen throughout the United States annually?
A: Yes!

Q: Are people able to post their pictures to your Facebook page?

A: I would love to see pictures of everyone’s candles burning on 9/11 and encourage everyone to share them!

Q: What other events do you have planned in your local area?

A:This is the only one I have planned but there are so many other events scheduled in the area. The Manchester CT Fire Department (who I dispatch for) is having a dedication ceremony at 0830 on 9/11 for the steel they acquired from ground zero that is been added to their memorial garden. https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=199916580071065

Again, thank you for taking time out of your busy day and spending time with me.  More importantly, thank you for your efforts to coordinate such a wonderful cause.  I look forward to seeing all the pictures of the neighborhoods that are participating

The Importance of Teaching Children Candle Safety

Teaching children about candle safety is a vitally important lesson regardless of how old they are.  I would like to share with you a true story.

I love candles.  There is that special ambiance that happens when a child’s face is glowing by candle light. As much as we, as adults enjoy the benefits of candle light, children are intrigued with the flame.

When one of my children was barely 4, I was in another room folding clothes.  On the table was a great 3 wick candle that smelled so good.  At the table was my little one who was also sitting at the table coloring.

That Strange Smell

From the laundry room I could smell what seemed like paper burning.  I went to investigate where the smell was coming from.  My little one was in the bathroom and the candle was still burning.  Since I could not find where the smell was coming from, I just assumed that maybe it was just in my mind.  So, back to folding clothes I went.

Dogs Are Smart

When my little was finished in the bathroom, he started playing with the dog and the dogs toy.  The toy was a teething rope.  As we all know, when children are quite, that usually means it is time to see what is going on.  Although the kids were quite, the dog was raising cain.  I walked into the kitchen just in time to see my 4 year old trying to put a fire out on the rug.

Remember the paper smell?  It was the dogs toy.  When fiber is set on fire it burns fast.  We were lucky that they fire was not worse than what it was.  It did however create a nice 12 inch circle of burned carpet which meant that a professional had to come in and repair that carpet.

The Lesson Learned

Regardless of how careful we are in teaching our children not to play with fire.  Kids should never be left alone while a candle is burning within their reach.  Small children are naturally curious, mix curiosity with the intriguing candle flame and you could have a very serious situation.

Have you ever had a situation where more caution should have been used while burning a candle?

As a nation, we were all impacted during the horrible attack on April 19th, 1995 when Timothy McVey bombed the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  Just six short years later, many of us watched in horror as the Twin Towers fell to terror attacks.  As this anniversary nears, let us honor the men and women who selflessly gave their time, lives, and support.

I found this fantastic article written by, Robert Mayer who is a reporter for the East Hampton Portland Patch.  With his permission, I am posting it here so that we can all join in nationwide to help show our support.

Please let me know if you will be joining in, I would love for you to share your pictures. I know my neighborhood will be joining and I look forward to showing off the photo’s.

Ex-Firefighter Aims To Spark National 9/11 Candle Memorial

On the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Lori Odishoo of Berlin wants all of us to pay tribute to those who lost their lives by lighting three candles.

Lori Odishoo of Berlin wasn’t prepared for what she saw when she and her husband, Matt, drove to New York City a few days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center to pay their respects.

“Words can’t express what I felt looking at it. There was dust everywhere. It was so overwhelming,” Odishoo, a former firefighter and current 911 dispatcher in Manchester, said recently. “We stopped at a few fire stations to pay our respects and it is hard to tell you how the firemen looked. They were almost haunted. There was such sorrow and pain in their eyes, it was hard to take.

“I wish I could be elegant with my words, but as I look back I still choke up trying to describe what we saw.”

Matt, the fire marshal and a firefighter in Berlin, and Lori had to drive through a defacto war zone to reach rubble-strewn lower Manhattan that day.

“We had to keep going through these checkpoints because the area was still very fluid,” Lori said. “We kept going and going and finally we were staring at what was left of the World Trade Center. We never expected to get there, but there we were in all the dust and debris.”

The couple was deeply affected by the post-apocalyptic scene, and Lori vowed to never forget the people who died or suffered as a result of the attacks. Every year since the attacks, she places three candles (red, white and blue) at the bottom of her driveway at dusk on Sept. 11. Some of her friends and neighbors have done it in years past, but this year, Lori wants to start a national movement to remember those affected by 9/11, and she wants your help.

“With this being the 10th anniversary, my goal is to get everybody to (do it),” Lori Odishoo said. “The first anniversary, some people did it. And I do it every year to make sure we remember,” she said. “But (this year) I want everybody to do it. I want the whole town to do it. I want the state to do it, and I want everyone in the country to do it.”

Lori Odishoo has started a Facebook page titled 9/11 10th Anniversary Candle Memorial to rally people across the country to the cause, and so far has 613 people listed as “attending” the candle “event.” People can also leave their memories and thoughts of Sept. 11 on the page’s wall.

The red candle signifies firefighters and EMS personnel. The white candle stands for civilian lives lost, and the blue is for police and military.

“This may not catch on all over, but (Berlin) is pretty great and I hope everyone will join us in remembering those who were affected by the tragedy.”

I encorage everyone to join in on this great Candles For A Cause Memorial.  I would also like to thank Lori Odishoo and Robert Mayer for sharing this great story and idea.

Candles For A Cause – Toledo Deaf Club

Our Candles for a cause articles help to bring awareness in areas that I believe are worthy of noting.  Sometimes the best way to help is by spreading the word of people and communities that help others.

Social clubs are a very important part of our communities.  There are many well known clubs such as the Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts, and 4H just to name a few.  These clubs help to provide a community that reaches to people within special areas.

The Toledo Deaf Club is no different.  Founded in 1936 is has been a long standing club for the deaf community within the Toledo, Ohio.  Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan areas.

Serving as a source for the deaf community for job postings, social gatherings, as well as severing the deaf community with community outreach help.

They are holding a special meeting on Saturday, July 30th 2011 at 2 p.m. at the club at 1809 Adams St, in Toledo, Ohio to discuss the future of the club.

To learn more about the Toledo Deaf Club and this special meeting, please view this article written by Traci Tillman and published by ToledoBlade.com.

Cleaning Day Candle Fragrances

Gosh, we all dread that wonderful day that we set aside for cleaning.  If you are an animal lover, you know that sometimes there are certain smells that little Fido and fluffy leave behind.

Using candle scented with essential oils that are specific for eliminating odors is great when your cleaning.

Here is a list of great order eliminating fragrances:

Mandarin

A fruitful aroma for eliminating and neutralizing odors naturally. The air is scrubbed of malodors by a tangy citrus blend, a natural essence of rosemary and sweetened by pineapple and sun ripened raspberry

Olive Tree

Blended with naturally occurring oils specifically for eliminating and neutralizing odors without potentially harmful, synthetic chemicals. A burst of lemon sunshine prepares the air to be thoroughly cleansed with spicy blend of geranium, thyme, and rosemary essential oils

Rosemary and Thyme

Typical household odors; tobacco, pet, bathroom, and kitchen; are no match to this cleansing citrus mélange. Sweet floral extracts cheer on this astringent blend of essential oils, yielding to a warm amber finish. A delightful way to eliminate and neutralize odors naturally without the potential harm of synthetic chemicals.

What are some of your favorite fragrance while you clean?

Ways To Use Candles For Your Outdoor Wedding Reception

Adding candle light to your outdoor wedding reception helps to give your special event a touch of magic.  Illuminating a walk way for your guests is just one idea.  Knowing where you are going to be using candles for your reception will help you create that special memorable moment.  Check below for more ideas.

Places to use candles

Adding a simple table centerpiece is ideal for outdoors.   Floating candles in a clear bowl with a little food coloring is a great way to add a little pizzazz to your table.

Pillar candles set in hurricane globes is another great way to add a simple elegant touch.

If there a pool, float tea lights in special floating tea light holders to add a touch of crystal to your pool water.

If  you will be giving votive candles as a wedding favor, add them to each guests table setting with a simple thank you card attached.

Line walk ways with lanterns that have votives in them.  This gives off a very beautiful, soft light for your guests.

Planning a wedding can be very stressful.  By using the ideas above this should give you a good starting point to help elevate some stress. Knowing how you will be using your candles will help you to plan your purchases.  Especially if you purchase your candles on-line.  This not only allows you to budget, it also allows you time for your purchases to meet shipping deadlines.
